Child Development Center

The Campus Child Development Center is located in the northeast section of the Los Angeles Valley College campus, in parking lot "D", adjacent to the corner of Oxnard Street and Ethel Avenue.

Applications for all programs, for the current and upcoming semesters are accepted continuously.

Applications must be completed and submitted to the Campus Child Development Center office to be considered for service and placement on the appropriate elegibility list(s).

Applications must be complete and accurate for proper placement and processing. Applications with missing or incomplete information will not be processed, as they cannot be rated for placement.

There are eligibility lists for all of the Campus Child Development Center programs. The length of the lists varies by program.

Student-parents have priority for service.

Fees for all Campus Child Development Center programs are calculated using a sliding scale based on family size and the gross monthly income. Subsidized service is available to eligible families.

Breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner are provided for all children enrolled, at no charge.

Students, particularly Child Development majors, participate in the programs under the direct supervision of a Lead Teacher.

Service for summer sessions and/or winter intersession is offered if funding is available to operate any or all of these sessions. Program days and hours for summer and winter sessions may be different from those offered for the fall and spring semesters.

LAVC Child Development Center is a demonstration site for the Outdoor Classroom Project.

Los Angeles Valley College Child Development Center serves as a model site for Child Development Centers within the Los Angeles Community College District. The Center is a state-of-the-art, LEED certified, nature-based school, featuring natural landscape, edible gardens and fully functional children’s kitchens in each classroom. The children’s classroom kitchen is equipped with a fully functional home-style kitchen offering children with hands-on-experience in preparing, cooking, eating and learning the nutritional value of food.

Los Angeles Valley College Child Development Center remains on the cutting edge of new and innovative approaches to children’ s learning as evidenced by its inclusion of cooking centers, a lending library, parent workshops, and the outdoor learning environment. Children have the opportunity to be active learners who canexperience the world through their senses, physical involvement, and active play, and from behaviors modeled by adults and peers. The outdoor environment is of high quality; we have cultivated the concept and practice that all children need and benefit from more time outdoors. The outdoor space is considered an extension of the classroom. There are designated learning centers set-up in the outdoor environment as well as the indoor environment. The outdoor environment is a high priority in our curriculum. Children and teachers have the opportunity to connect to nature through hands on learning. The outdoor curriculum constitutes an emerging approach in early education that integrates indoor and outdoor learning in a unified environment that optimizes children’s learning experiences.
